Cake Boards vs. Masonite Drums: What to Pick for Heavy Celebration Cakes

Avoid catastrophic cake collapses. Learn when a lightweight 3mm board is sufficient, and when a 12mm rigid masonite drum is mandatory.

Cake Boards vs. Masonite Drums: What to Pick for Heavy Celebration Cakes

1. 3mm Cardboard vs. 12mm Masonite Hardboard

Standard 3mm corrugated boards flex when carried with one hand. For single-tier teacakes or light 1/2 kg sponges, this is acceptable. But for buttercream loaded cakes with ganache, flexible boards crack the frosting seams.

2. Load Capacity and Weight Tolerance

Our 12mm Masonite Drums feature an engineered solid MDF wood core that easily holds over 20 kg without a millimetre of deflection. Perfect for 2-tier and 3-tier wedding cakes.

3. Rule of Thumb for Board Diameter

Always choose a cake drum that is 2 inches larger in diameter than your bottom sponge layer. For an 8-inch cake, select a 10-inch drum. This leaves a 1-inch border all around for piping borders, ribbon trim, and safe finger grip during transport.
